Well... this is embarassing. Here we are, 4 months since my last post. I had told myself I would post monthly during our adventures in Switzerland, but then January happened and blogging was not at the top of my priority list. Instead of dwelling on what I haven't done these last few months, I'll share a quick update about what has been going on since the New Year.
In late January, we received the "kündigung" in the mail from our landlord. This is a formal notice that our lease will be ending. They were very kind and have given us a year to find a new place. They will be renovating the whole building, so all the other tenants are also trying to find a new place to live. Some of the tenants here have been in this apartment building for 50 or even 60 years! It has been a difficult time of transition for many. Thankfully in our case, we knew that our lease would end at some point in 2025, so we were mentally prepared. We began slowly searching for a new apartment in February. What made our search difficult was that we were not yet sure in which part of Bern we wanted to live. There are some beautiful quartiers around the city, but many of them are pricey, so we would have to settle for a smaller space. With growing kids, we didn't feel like this would be the best option. Instead, we started looking outside of the city. Long story short, we just signed our lease last week and will be moving shortly to a small village outside of Bern! It is a farming community and everything is within walking distance. We are even less than 15 minutes away by train from downtown Bern! Justyn will also be closer to his work, which means more quality time at home.
The best part is that we somehow scored an old farmhouse to rent! It was built in 1790 (!!) and has old wooden walls and beams everywhere. It was recently remodelled, so the kitchen is well-equiped and new! It is almost double the size of our present apartment, and is super close to a beautiful large park in town. Right in front of the house is a dairy farm. The cows walk down the street to and from the fields every day. I can't wait to sip my coffee on the balcony while watching them stop traffic with their prcession! As if all of this wasn't enough, it even has a fireplace in the living room. I will be sharing photos later, once we are settled into our new place. Maybe I will even make a post comparing our present apartment with our new one.
I will be making more blog posts in the near future, showing you more small adventures we have been having, especially with the weather warming up. Right now though, I will leave you with a small collection of some of our activities these last couple of weeks. The weather was incredibly warm last weekend (27 degrees Celcius!) but today we woke up with snow.
