November marked a month of family for us. My parents came down November 15th, and our family time ended when my mother and father in law left on December 11th. Since my parents had never visited Switzerland, we made it our goal to visit as many places within 1.5 hours from Bern as possible. This meant playing tourist for the first time since moving to Switzerland!
The first few days, we took it slowly since my parents were adjusting to the time difference. We visited a few of our favourite areas in Bern: the Gurten (the small mountain in the south end of the city with an amazing view of Bern), as well as the Bear Pit. The pictures you see below by the water are from a new area of the city we explored during our first few days with my parents. There is always something new to explore in Bern!
Today, I want to share with you pictures of our first trip out: Murten! Murten is the German name, but it is also called Morat in French. It is a billingual town in the canton on Fribourg. It’s barely 45 minutes away by train.
As per usual when travelling with kids, as soon as we arrive at our destination, we start looking for a playground to get some energy out. Even though Murten is a small town, we found a large playground within 5 minutes walk from the train station.
Murten is located on a lake. The medieval town is surrounded by old city walls and has beautiful archways leading in and out of the historical part of town. As you can probably tell by the pictures, this is a huge tourist destination, especially in the summer time! Apparently, there are organized bike tours around the lake that offer breathtaking views. I hope to do some family biking around that area in the spring and summertime!
We spent the day walking around on cobblestone streets, and took a stroll along the ramparts. Of course, we had to take an obligatory break at a tea house for a coupe Denmark! Even though it was a chilly day, ice cream was a welcome treat! We found out once we arrived in Murten that most shops and cafes are closed on Mondays. But that didn't matter too much in the end - we spent most of the day outdoors, soaking in the beauty of the area. It also allowed for a slower pace around town, which was perfect for the girls. Murten is a lovely town that I hope to visit again soon!
